For some collectors there comes a time, when you either need to scale back your collection or get rid of it completely. I know some of you are shuddering at the thought, but unfortunately that does happen.
Now if you're one of those people you may be wondering what do I do first?
1. Make a complete list of the items you wish to sell. Include year, item name and condition. Be truthful about the condition the item is in. Also add the price you wish to get for the item - BE REALISTIC.
2. Decide whether you want to sell your collection piece by piece yourself or a secondary party or whether you'd rather sell the entire collection as a whole to a dealer or another collector.
Selling your collection piece by piece may gain you more money, but it will cost you a LOT more time. The internet provides you with a multitude of venues to sell your items at zero or little cost to you the seller. There are bulletin boards, classified ads, auction sites, easy to set up online stores and more.
If you'd like to sell your collection piece by piece, but don't want to invest your own time, there are some people out there that will take care of all the selling for you for a fee. In most cases you will ship your collection to the "broker" who will then inventory your items. They will list each item individually at one of the auction houses and will take care of dealing with each sale from listing to shipping. Depending upon the broker you may get a check after each sale or after the sale of your entire inventory. For more information on brokering - you can contact SuZ - smarr@abcs.com
If you decide to sell your collection as a whole to a dealer or another collector your work is almost done. Simply send your completed inventory list to all possible buyers. Be negotiable on your price, remember that dealers may be interested in buying the whole collection, but they have to buy at a price that will still garner them a small profit when they resell your items.
It may be helpful to look around at the Secondary Market dealers sites to see what your items are selling for on their sites. If Dealer X has one of your items priced at $10; you can't expect them to pay you $15 or even $10 for yours.
